One of the systems necessary for the survival of the organism is the immune system. However, the immune response is an energy-demanding process. Therefore the immune system controls some molecular mechanisms which ensure a sufficient supply of energy to immune cells during the immune response. There is a metabolic switch when the metabolism of non-immune tissues is suppressed, and the energy saved is then used by immune cells. The immune system thus behaves selfishly towards other tissues.
