Teorie o severoamerickém původu nebyla potvrzena fosilními nálezy, naopak mnohé společné znaky (např. mikrostruktura skloviny řezáků) třetihorních fosilií jihoamerických a severoafrických potvrzují dávnou teorii Maxe Schlossera o africkém původu (možnost postupné migrace přes řetězec ostrovů dokládá i studium dna Atlantského oceánu).

The New World primates (Platyrrhini) and South American hystricognathes (Caviomorpha) are also remarkable South American mammal groups. During the 20th century, the origin of both the groups was debated by palaeontologists. The hypothesis on their North American origin has not yet been confirmed by fossil records. On the other hand, many traits shared among South American and North African Tertiary fossils (e.g., incisor enamel microstructure) support the ancient hypothesis elaborated by Max Schlosser on the African origin of both groups (the possibility of their step-by-step migration over a chain of islands has been supported by studies of the Atlantic Ocean bottom).
