In the palm family with its numerous species, both small types (10 - 15 cm) and giant trees reaching about 60 m can be found. The latter includes the genus Ceroxylon, which is a native of the Andes in South America. It is distinguished by a tall stem, with circled leaf scars and covered by a wax layer (from which the name of the genus is derived: keros = wax). C. quindiuense is the tallest species of this genus. Its richest population has been found in misty mountain forests in Colombia, at altitudes between 2000 - 3100 m.
