Článek předkládá kritickou konfrontaci současných druhových konceptů a současných znalostí o mezidruhové hybridizaci, introgresi DNA a povaze hybridních zón. Dochází k závěru, že značná část „druhů“ jsou vlastně tzv. semispecies (ring species), které nelze považovat za rovnocenné „atomy biodiverzity“ a jednoduše sčítat.

This article presents a critical comparison of present-day conceptions regarding species and current knowledge of interspecific hybridization, adaptive DNA introgression and the nature of hybrid zones. It concludes that a significant number of the officially recognized "species" are in fact semispecies (ring species), which cannot be regarded as equivalent "biodiversity atoms" and simply counted.
