The Czech Society for Ornithology announced the European Turtle-dove (Streptopelia turtur) as the Bird of the Year 2019. This once widespread species has declined steeply across Europe and has recently been uplisted to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. An International Species Action Plan identifies four causes of this decline: habitat changes in the European breeding grounds and in Africa, illegal killing and unsustainable hunting in the Mediterranean. To restore species numbers it is of primary importance to change the way farmland is managed in Europe and maintain the mosaic landscape on which the species depends.
