The Obří důl, Labský důl, Sněžné a Kotelní jámy glacier cirques, and certainly the highest mountain peaks of the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains are among the most interesting botanical sites in the Czech Republic. They have long been and still are a frequent target of researchers, and it is not surprising that a number of descriptions of unknown species of organisms come from the Krkonoše Mts. sites. The glacial cirques of the eastern and western parts of this mountain range are considered to be the richest in species. Geological variability has contributed to the higher species diversity by many calciphilous species. Besides the Eastern Sudeten (Hrubý Jeseník) there are no other similar sites in the Czech Republic with a significant share of the arctic-alpine species. Cryptogam research has come to life in recent years, yet many uncharted sites have yet to be discovered.
