In ancient Egypt there were several major religious centres. Various myths with many characters originated in these centres. Through ancient Greek authors, the gods Ammon, Thoth, Osiris, Isis and Ptah amongst others got into world cultural heritage and were also widely used in scientific nomenclature. In recent times, taxonomists have been inspired by other less well-known African myths as well.
