The last part of the series about viviparous fish recalls Julius Göllmer, a German pharmacist from Caracas, who discovered the most popular livebearer of all time – Poecilia reticulata, in May 14th 1856. This article is about the history of this discovery, imports of this fish and its breeding in laboratory and domestic tanks. An integral part of the history of this fish, worldwide called the guppy after its second discoverer – Robert John Guppy from Trinidad – is also the cultivation of its color and shape variations. These variations are, together with easy breeding, reason why those fish are so popular and valued.
