Charles Darwin objevil na své cestě fosilie prvních známých druhů meridiungulátů – Toxodon platensis z řádu Notoungulata a Macrauchenia patachonica z řádu Litopterna.

In the Tertiary Period and early Quaternary Period, South America was inhabited by the so-called southern ungulates from the superorder Meridiungulata. The taxon is remarkable due to its extraordinary level of convergence in taxonomic characters highly similar to other non-related ungulate groups – odd-toed ungulates and even-toed ungulates. During his voyage, Charles Darwin discovered fossils of the first known meridiungulates, namely Taxodon platensis from the order Notoungulata, as well as Macrauchenia patachonica from the order Litopterna.
