The last large population of the Hermit Chazara briseis in the Czech Republic inhabits volcanic hills in the České středohoří Highlands. This specialist of short-sward steppes is highly endangered due to the abandonment of its sites, and its conservation status and prospects have been further complicated by its peculiar demography. The only way to safeguard this butterfly species is through a large-scale restoration of overgrown areas followed by regular management, especially grazing.
