Zatímco dříve zůstávala ribonukleová kyselina spíše ve stínu DNA, hlavní nositelky genetické informace, dnes se dostává stále více do popředí zájmu. Vzrůstající význam malých nekódujících RNA odráží i fakt, že v r. 2006 byly dvě Nobelovy ceny uděleny právě za výzkum syntézy, struktury, funkce a významu RNA. Úvodní příspěvek předpokládané série článků, která postupně přiblíží tuto „druhou“ nukleovou kyselinu, se věnuje historizujícímu připomenutí hlavních poznatků o struktuře a vlastnostech RNA.

Whereas in the past, ribonucleic acid (RNA) figured in the shadow of deoxyribonucleic acid, which contains the instructions for biological development, nowadays RNA is attracting ever increasing attention. Even the fact that two Nobel Prizes in 2006 were awarded for research into the synthesis, structure, function and importance of RNA demonstrates the increasing importance of small non–coding RNAs. The first article of the new series on this subject deals with structure and the main characteristics of RNA.
