The existence of species is clear even to ordinary people. What is the origin of the particular species and what establishes an effective interspecific barrier? Closely related species and subspecies within hybrid zones, i.e. limits of their neighbouring distribution ranges, are a suitable model to study the above questions. In West Bohemia, there is the hybrid zone between the Eastern European House Mouse — Mus (musculus) musculus and Western European House Mouse — Mus (musculus) domesticus. Using the example, the authors describe the opposing processes of migration and selection at the allele, gene and population level.
